The Process/ at the Forge

Unlike foundry work, which requires the making of models and molds, and then casting molten metal into the molds (usually by people other than the artist), FORGING is a direct process by which a section of hot metal is HAMMERED by the artist directly into the desired shape. The end product is a one-of-a-kind piece, which has been monitored every step of the way directly by the artist. This hammering can be done by hand or by large industrial-type power hammers (seen below). Properly done, the metal is very smooth to the touch plus exceedingly strong and durable. Below are some views of this process and of this particular studio (built by the artist). You may also wish to see: Process/ the Design and CommissioningStage.
